Adrian's Travels:
03/03/10
(Hand in WCPF Members Exhibition entries)
Costa Rican Encounter - Adrian Langdon The meeting this week was presented by one of our long standing members, Adrian Langdon, who showed us images from 2 of his recent trips to foreign lands. The first was a trip made last Sept/ Oct time to Yellowstone Park and the Grand Titons. It was just the right time for the Autumn ,or Fall, colours. They were stunning. Adrians principal interest is Natural History and he showed some fabulous images of Elk, Bison, Grizzly Bear, Otters etc. as well as some beautiful landscapes.
After the tea interval, we saw a complete contrast in habitat from a trip the previous November to Costa Rica. Here it was wet and very green amongst the forest where the smaller animals, insects and birds were more in evidence, with some of them taken actually in their accomodation, which was a little on the basic side.
Adrian was thanked by Paul Craddock, for providing his stunning images together with the well informed commentary.

St Austell Critique:
25/02/10
The meeting was held at St Austell Camera Club hall, but before the critique proper began, we had an update on the condition of Roy Hoar. Roy is a former Wadebridge club, St Austell club and a CWTPG member. His brother, Brian outlined visiting arrangements and told us that Roy is still in hospital awaiting the results of a biopsy. Each club had submitted 15 prints, and 15 images for projection. Images from the clubs were displayed alternately and Bob then MC'd as the members gave a short critique on each others work. As the 2 clubs know each other very well, it was a very friendly and enjoyable evening with much good natured banter being directed at each other. There was a good turn out from Wadebridge membership despite inclement weather and the meeting being on an evening which is not our usual meeting evening. Paul Craddock gave a vote of thanks to the St Austell members for their hospitality and an enjoyable evening. It was provisionally agreed that we would host a similar evening next season on 23rd February 2011!

Print 4:
17/02/10
Well - what a night! Over 40 prints were submitted and many of them designated "cracking image" status, to quote directly from some of the critical comments expressed by the assembled members. Lots of well deserved "silver" awards were assigned and a good few "golds". There was much energetic debate about some of the more creative aspects of many images and there was also plenty of well received advice, offered where it was felt to be helpful, for our emerging members. Most of us had our favourites from the diverse range of more accomplished images that we particularly enjoyed looking at through the course of the evening, but two prints from Paul McCullagh stole the show for many of us. The first was a composite image made up from a variety of angular views of a viaduct, a sort of "Hockney meets the cubists" take on a piece of classical architecture. The second was an image harking back to the illustrators of the 50's and 60's children's books by authors like Enid Blyton. It was a whitened vignette of a little girl playing with a ball and her dog in the garden. The colours were subtly rich, an effect Paul achieved partly through the use of a "Topaz" filter. We ended the night with a reminder about next week's Thursday night critique evening at St Austell. Our thoughts go out to Roy and his family as news arrives of his more serious condition in Trelisk Hospital. by Jeremy (Standing in for your regular correspondent Delia, who is currently on tour in Lincolnshire)

Showing the
London Salon:
03/02/10
'Horse & Tree in Fog' -Tony McDonnell, London Salon'09 Exhibition Medal Winner The meeting was introduced by our President Paul Craddock, and we were treated to a viewing of a Digital presentation of the prestigious 98th London Print Salon. A total of 182 prints had been accepted but in order not to make the presentation too long, just 80 images were put onto the CD. The aim of the London Salon is to encourage an artistic approach to photography and we were shown a wide range of images. After the tea break we viewed the Guernsey Salon acceptances from the General Mono, the Mono Portrait and the General Colour sections. These were of a more traditional style in comparison to the London Salon images. There was a reminder to get our entries for the WCPF Knightshayes trophy in next week. The subject being Ground Level.

Natural History: 20/01/10 Adrian Langdon - Copulating Kingfishers Brian Galbraith chaired the meeting and introduced the judge for the evening who was Steve Bulford,a member of the St Austell Camera Club and an accomplished wildlife photographer. Steve made a point of finding plus points in all the images shown, but was also able to point out where he felt an image could have been enhanced. One of his recurring suggestions was using the crop tool, to eliminate parts of the picture which didn't add to the overall effect. We went through all the images in each section before he announced the results; which were; DPI's 1st--- Grey Heron Landing by Adrian Langdon 2nd---Broad Bodied Chaser by Chris Curtis 3rd---Garden Spider and Wasp by Emma Wilson HC---George the Egret by Penry Archer HC---Field Mouse by Chris Curtis HC---Goslings by Jeremy Northcott
Prints 1st---Frogs by Jeremy Northcott 2nd---Copulating Kingfishers by Adrian Langdon 3rd---Reed Warbler by Jeremy Northcott HC---Ibex by John Evans-Jones HC---Albino Squirrel by Penry Archer HC---Damselflies by Chris Curtis

WCPF Travelling Critique: 13/01/10
Anne Chapman - Remembrance The first meeting of the New Year finally got underway on Wed. 13th January with a showing of the WCPF Travelling Print Critique. This is a collection of 100 images which almost made it to the WCPF Members Exhibition. They are boxed and sent on a rota around the member clubs for viewing and discussion. Brian Galbraith organised this for the club and he suggested a different way of viewing the images. Rather than the usual one at a time viewing, he set up panels of a dozen at a time so that members could judge them as a group of images and select their own favourites. He also encouraged members to get involved by thinking about what was good and what could be improved. We ended up with 6 or so best images which we then voted on to find an overall winner. Members agreed this approach worked very well, by encouraging discussion and critique, and Brian was thanked for collecting and displaying the images.
